Your Leadership Story

Your Leadership Story
Grit and glory

The Power of Personal Narrative

Consider two leaders introducing themselves to their teams:

Leader A: "I have 15 years of experience in technology and an MBA from a top university."

Leader B: "I started my career by failing spectacularly at my first startup..."

Which leader would you trust to guide you through challenges?

Crafting Your Leadership Narrative

1. Finding Your Core Stories

Every leader has pivotal moments that shape their approach. These typically fall into four categories:

  • Challenge Stories: Moments of overcoming obstacles
  • Growth Stories: Key learning experiences
  • Values Stories: Incidents that shaped your principles
  • Vision Stories: Experiences that drive your goals

Exercise: Story Mining

Take 15 minutes to identify one story from each category. Focus on moments that:

  • Challenged your assumptions
  • Changed your perspective
  • Taught you something crucial
  • Influenced your leadership style

2. Structuring Your Narrative

Use the CRUNCHED framework to develop each story:

  • Contextual: Set the scene clearly
  • Realistic: Include genuine challenges

  • Natural: Keep the flow conversational
  • Concrete: Include specific details

  • Easily Accepted: Make it relatable
  • Discovery-oriented: Share learned insights
